COURSE OBJECTIVES :
These objectives will be met through reading our text, viewing slide and films, and discussing and writing about art.

  • To gain knowledge and understanding of the history of art, its terms and  practice, primarily Western, from the Prehistoric to Gothic periods.
  • To learn to understand and evaluate critically art works of various periods and styles.
  • To understand and appreciate how art functions within a society.
  • To widen your perception and ability to describe and analyze art works in their social and historical as well as aesthetic contexts.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS :

  1. REGULAR CLASS ATTENDANCE

    • Evaluation of participation will be based on accurate and succinct responses to questions from the instructor and active and thoughtful participation in class and small group discussions. Being in class is good, but not sufficient to receive the full 5%.
    • More than two absences [unless legitimately excused] will affect your grade directly at the rate of 1% per additional absence from the 5% , after the determination of the participation grade.

  3. During the course of the semester you must demonstrate that you have met the objectives stated above. There will be:
    • 8 Weekly Quizzes  [15% of grade]
      • 6 of 8 are required -- If you take more than 6, the lowest grade[s] will be dropped.
    • 6 "Weekly" Analyses: ALL are required[40% of grade]
    • A required FIELDTRIP and report  [10% of grade
      • To be arranged for the 7th week
    • A Midterm: [20% of grade]
    • A Final Exam [15% of grade]
